Apparently Air New Zealand is set to offer flat beds in economy on its new fleet of Boeing 777-300 ER planes. These are planes that are going to be rolled out this November. The flat bed, which is being called the Skycouch, is made up of three standard seats that can be changed into a single, horizontal space by moving arm rests and covering over the footwell. Of course, the seats do not fully recline.

So who is going to use these flat beds in economy. Well apparently these flat beds are being called the Cuddle Class and being pitched to couples and families with young children. Passengers would need to buy all three of the seats together and pay the full price for two economy seats and half price for the third.

He airline said that the new seating will transform international air travel, creating a flexible space ideal for couples and for those traveling with their younger children. Rob Fyfe, Air New Zealand’s chief executive officer, said that for the past three years they have been designing a new long haul experience that will reignite the passion of today’s travelers. For those who choose it, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are finally gone.

Fyfe has also announced an overhaul of the airline’s premium economy cabin. He claims that it will offer improved dinning and comfort. 22 Skycouch seats will be fitted on the new aircrafts, making up the first 11 rows of the economy class cabin. They will be launched on Air New Zealand services between Auckland and Los Angeles.
