Sydney Tourist Attraction Goes Green For St. Patrick’s Day

Posted on: February 16th, 2010 by Robin Welch

Apparently reports are suggesting that the Sydney Opera House, one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Australia, is set to turn green at sunset on March 17th. This little event will take place to honor St. Patrick’s Day.

To coincide with the “green event” at the Sydney Opera House, Tourism Ireland is launching a nationwide St. Patrick Mates Rate Campaign. This campaign will provide consumers with special offers on travel from and around Ireland to Australia.

The CEO of Tourism Ireland, Niall Gibbons, said that over seventy million people around the world claim links with the island of Ireland. St Patrick’s Day is a truly unique opportunity for these people to showcase these links. He went on to say that the agreement to allow them to green such an iconic building and attraction in Australia had to be a first for any destination. He said that it clearly illustrates the goodwill that the Ireland brand generates across the world.

Of course, this little greening event is good business for Sydney as well. In fact, experts point out that it is a good thing for all of Australia. This is due to the fact that a large portion of Australia’s economy is based on tourism. In fact, Australia’s economy is based more on tourism than many other countries.

This little event is the perfect chance for hotels in Australia, as well as other businesses that are linked to the tourism industry, to see a boost in sales. This is good news following a year that was less than pleasant for the travel industry.
