It now seems that people from all over the world have now flocked to Sydney to take part in their gay Mardi Gras. To start off this event, people have chosen to loose their business suits and strip down to something a little bit more comfortable.

This Mardi Gras has now generated global buzz. News really started coming in about this event after 5,200 naked people stood on the steps of the Sydney Opera House, which is one of the most recognized buildings in the world. This was a project that was indeed commissioned by the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Photos of the event were taken by famous United States photographer Spencer Tunick. Apparently Tunick has been organizing these kinds of mass nude gatherings since 1994. This does include his record breaking attempt in Mexico’s Zocalo Square, where over 18,000 people posed nude for him.

Mardi Gras began with the annual parade of floats throughout the streets of Sydney. Reports show that the streets were packed with crowds of people who came to see the parade. The theme for this year’s parade was History of the World, and it was one of the largest parades ever in Mardi Gras history. There were some 135 floats and 9,400 participants.

This parade got its start back in 1978 when thousands of homosexual men and women took to the streets to demand equal rights and to end discrimination. The parade may now be about lavish costumes and parties, but there is still a political meaning behind it. Nowadays people from all over the world take part in Marid Gras.
