Australian Students Studying Overseas Are Not Safe Enough

Posted on: March 12th, 2010 by Robin Welch

According to the Baird Report, which just came out this week, Australian students who are studying overseas are getting inadequate protection. This report, which was commissioned by the Australian Department for Education, was made to produce a report on the legislation that governs international education in Australia. In the end, the report has raised a number of concerns about international education as a whole.

The report did discuss the recent violence and assaults on Indian students who are studying in Australia. The report said that these recent attacks, mostly on Indian students, has saddened many people. It is very disappointing to see Australia’s reputation as a safe county be damaged due to these acts of violence.

Thus, the report recommends that overseas students should have more support and somewhere safe to go if problems arise. The report even suggested strengthening legislation to protect international students.

Some other problems that were addressed in the report include fraudulent colleges. These fake universities are becoming a growing concern, not only for Australian students studying overseas, but students who choose to study in Australia. A lot of false and misleading information is being provided by some education agents. This is leading to poor quality education and training, over enrollment, lack of education facilities, and of course loss of money for the student in question.

Overall, the report is calling for more support for international students and to improve the overall quality and availability of information for these students. For Australia, as well as many other counties, international students make up a good deal of the economic income of that area. If students do not feel safe then that country, or local area, may lose this source of income.
