Sydney Airport Still Ranked as Worst Airport in Australia
Posted on: March 16th, 2010 by Paul ScottNow, for the fourth consecutive year in a row, Sydney Airport has been labeled as Australia’s worst major airport. In the latest Australian Competition and Consumer Commission annual report on airport performance, Sydney Airport is behind first ranked Brisbane and other airports like Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide.
The chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Graeme Samuel, said that this year’s report has found that the performance of Sydney Airport is still of great concern. This report showed that Sydney has increased profits by permitting service quality to fall below that of which people expect from airports.
Mr Samuel went on to say that it appears that investment in the international terminal has been slow. Sydney Airport was the only airport to report a fall in passenger numbers. However, it still managed to increase its revenue and profit margins.
The airport recorded the highest average price per passenger. Sydney Airport said that the average passenger pays $13.63 at the airport itself. This is being compared to Melbourne Airport’s $7.96 average. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found that the average passenger price at Sydney Airport increase by 5 percent, while Brisbane recorded the highest increase of 13.6 percent for the second year in a row.
However, Sydney Airport fought back and said that the report was out of date. They said that its $500 million international terminal upgrade had progressed since the survey was done in 2008-2009. It has expanded the departures area, a combined Customs hall, a new security screening area and more food and beverages. Sydney Airport went on to release their own survey showing that 84 percent of its respondents rated the terminal a seven out of 10.
