Jetstar Engine Fires Up During Flight

Posted on: March 18th, 2010 by Dave Humphries

According to new reports, the right wing of a Jetstar plane caught on fire while it was en route to Darwin on Monday night. Flight JQ760, operated by an Airbus 320-200, had been coming from Adelaide carrying 163 people. About 12 minutes into the flight, the pilot switched on the fasten seat belt sign.

Passengers have reports that a loud bang was heard immediately afterward, and the plane shuddered midair. Passengers told local media that they witnessed streaks of flames coming out of the right-hand engine. Passengers who were sitting on the right side of the plane were saying a big flame came out from the right engine, and the lights on the right wing also stopped working.

Of course, these same passengers went on to say that, after the noise, everything was quite and there was a very worried look on everyone’s faces. However, according to another report from a passenger, everyone was apparently screaming on the plane.

Either way, everyone agrees that during the event the cabin crew remained very clam. They were able to shutdown the engine before carrying out a normal standby response for the landing of the plane in Adelaide. Thus, the plane returned to Adelaide after only being gone for 30 minutes. Emergency services were on standby at Adelaide airport as the plane landed and passengers were evacuated by an air bridge.

Despite all of these rumors, Jetstar has come out and denied that the engine ever caught on fire. They went on to say that the so called “flames” that people were seeing were just sparks. The carrier did admit that the aircraft had experienced a mechanical fault, but the cause of this fault is still unknown.
