Qantas Plane’s Tires Explode Upon Landing
Posted on: April 2nd, 2010 by Bobby JonesTwo tires on a Qantas A380 jet have reportedly exploded last night when the jet was trying to land at Sydney’s Kingford Smith Airport. This flight was carrying 244 people from Singapore to Sydney and had touched down on the runway when the two dual tires under the left wing were damaged.
Staff located in the control tower reported visible fire from the brakes during the roll out. However, there was no fire or smoke visible by the time the aircraft came to a halt. Despite this fact, crew members requested fire engines to attend the aircraft and emergency services told media that all tires on the left hand main gear had deflated. This left the airplane sitting on its rims.
A spokeswoman for Qantas said that the A380-800 did not make an emergency landing and passengers were in no kind of danger. The aircraft stayed on the runway to be assessed by engineers, but the cause is still unknown.
This incident comes as Qantas engineers announce their vote to extend overtime bans through the four day Easter break. The Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia told the media that it could not guarantee flights to run on schedule over Easter break. They went on to say that they wanted to apologize in advance to the traveling public if delays occur. Qantas managers have forced this situation by failing to manage its workforce.
Despite these delay concerns from the engineers, Qantas has a different take on the story. The airline says that there will be no impact to passengers as engineers choose not to work. This is because engineers normally do not work weekends or public holidays anyway.
