Australian Flights Being Affected by Flight Cancellations in Europe

Posted on: April 21st, 2010 by Robin Welch

Apparently no country is safe from the cancellations caused by the ash cloud over Europe. This news comes as flights to and from Australia over UK airspace last weekend were all canceled. The UK’s major airports that operate flights to and from Australia have all been affected. This means that people due to travel to Australia could now face their flights being banned.

Although the ban was suppose to be lifted some time ago, it appears that the ash is still a problem. A lot of this has to do with a second ash cloud that popped up. Due to this, thousands of people have been left stranded from their Easter Breaks to Australia.

Anxious people that just want to get home have been told that they will be refunded their money fully. Passengers can check with other airlines to see if they can get a flight home. However, other travelers have started to look for alternative ways to reach the mainland.

Many airlines are just giving people their money back or the option to book on a later flight. However, there are a select few airlines that are offering their passengers hotel rooms and free meals. Passengers that have not been given this option have been sleeping in airports all across the country waiting for a flight to open up.

The NATS, or the UK’s air traffic control body, said that they have never seen anything like this before in the history of aviation. There have been some flights that have been given the go ahead to fly, but these flights are few and far between. The volcano is still spewing ash, and it does not show any signs of stopping.
