Rockhampton Airport in Queensland to Gain Full International Status
Posted on: May 10th, 2010 by Tanya PropstIt now seems that the Rockhampton Airport in Queensland could be granted full international status. Federal MP Kirsten Livermore is currently holding high level talks with Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese about what needs to be done to make full use of this airport on an international level.
Livermore’s first election commitment was to have the Rockhamtpon Airport runway extended to take international jets. It stands to reason that this would have to be done in order for the airline to be given international status.
Major Brad Carter went on to say that the council-owned airport, which is already one of the busiest and fastest growing regional airports in all of Australia, is ready to expand further. If the airport was able to secure intentional charter flights, then their airport could be international capable tomorrow. A new tower is currently being built, and they are already have the security, baggage handling and customs facilities that are required. The airport does not need any new technology or any kind of further major investment to reach international stats.
If this big proposal is granted, it will be a great opportunity for the region’s hotels and hospitality industry to have specific tourist charters flying in from abroad. It would also enable the region’s holidaymakers to fly direct to international destinations.
Overall, this proposal would be a big plus for the area. It would give the people living there a lot more flying options without having to use a lot of connecting flights or driving to other international airports. It is still not yet known just how long it will take this airport to reach international status if it gets the go ahead.
