Tiger Airways Puts the Pressure on Golfers By Charging Them an Extra $60
Posted on: June 10th, 2010 by Robin WelchMany people know Tiger Airways as a carrier that offers popular destinations around Australia for cheap. Right now passengers flying with Tiger Airways can get tickets to Melbourne or Gold Coast from many areas for just $38. However, if that passenger happens to be a golfer, it could now cost them an extra $60, which is almost double the ticket cost.
However, this new supercharged surcharge may not be the low point for the carrier. Other experts point to the fact that Tiger Airways has not ruled out the idea of a pee fee for using their toilets. The airline also foresees a time when it will fly planes that cannot carry any luggage.
So this journey to more surcharges started just last month when Tiger Airways doubled its sports equipment surcharge. This is a charge that is really going to hurt golfers who would like to take a trip with their golf clubs. Apparently experts say that this is all part of the airline’s mission to discourage people from carrying on a lot of items.
Why is the carrier so concerned with having people drop the luggage? Well less luggage means lighter loads. This, in turn, means lighter fuel bills and better profit for the carrier. Thus, it all boils down to the need for more money.
Thus, some people are now saying that Tiger Airways may not be the cheapest airline to fly with. When adding on a lot of the surcharges that some people may want or need, a fare could cost as much as $200. That is a big difference from the $38 advertised. Checked luggage insurance, choosing a decent seat, paying with a credit card, and eating or drinking something on the plane all equal more surcharges.
