Australia Slowly Starting to See the Return of Holidaymakers
Posted on: June 11th, 2010 by Emily PenbrynGood news for the Australian economy, and that is the fact that more people are finally starting to take more trips to Australia for holidays. This good news comes as the world finally starts to slowly recover from the global recession.
The latest International Visitor Survey by the Tourism and Transport Forum shows that the number of visitors to Australia is up some 6 percent from January to March of this year when compared to last year’s numbers. This slight rise in visitors is very heartening for the tourism industry of Australia, which has suffered as a result of people traveling less and staying closer to home. Other factors that have played a big role in recovery include airlines offering cheap flights to Australia.
Business travel has also gone up slightly for Australia. The number of people traveling to Australia on business is up 9.7 percent this quarter from the same period last year. However, whilst all these visitors may be traveling to Australia on holiday, they are not spending more.
In fact, spending for travelers going to Australia is down some 3.9 percent on average daily spending. It has started to fall a lot due to the fact that the Australian dollar has proven strong against some of the other weak currencies. This has discouraged people from wanting to travel to this area of the world. Those that do travel there are likely to spend less as a result.
It is hoped that latest campaign by Tourism Australia will help to boost visitor numbers even more. On top of this, Tourism Australia has also launched a campaign to try and keep Aussies from traveling overseas for their holidays. They are trying to show them that there is a lot that they can do right in their own back yard.
