It now seems that a few flights between Sydney and Canberra have had to be canceled. This news comes as Qantas is forced to ground five Bombardier Q400 jets that had some landing gear problems. The aircraft, which were being operated by the carrier’s regional arm, had to be remove from service following some advice from the manufacturer.

One of the overseas Q400 also had a similar problem not too long ago. This has now prompted Qantas to investigate the fleet. Apparently cracks were discovered in a major component of the landing gear fitting in five of its 21 Bombardiers. So far the remaining 16 are unaffected and remain in service.

Alan Joyce, who is the chief executive of Qantas, said that this issue was not an immediate safety concern. However, it needs to be dealt with before these planes can be added back into service.

As of right now, a resolution is not expected until the end of this week. This is going to force even more cancellations on Sydney to Canberra flights each day. Customers who are being affected by this have been told to contact Qantas so that they can be put on the next available flight.

Mr Joyce finished up by saying that the airline’s approach to this issue, which does require the replacement of the main landing gear fitting component, is consistent with Qantas’ proactive, safety first approach. Qantas prides itself in putting peoples’ safety before all else.

Once again, Qantas has proven that it is willing to take a loss in profits to make sure that its consumers remain safe. This is a guideline that most travelers wish airlines would follow.
