Strong Australian Dollar Causing Australians to Travel Overseas
Posted on: February 10th, 2011 by Andrew SoyerLately, people have been talking about the struggling tourism industry in Australia. The industry is struggling because the Australian dollar is so strong when compared to other countries’ currencies. This means that people visiting Australia have to pay more to get the same amount of money…not really a very appealing factor.
However, there is another factor that is affecting the tourism industry in Australia. That is the fact that many Australians are finding it better to take a vacation overseas than to stay inside the country. The tourism industry in Australia counts on, not only international visitors ,but domestic ones as well.
When people break it down, the fact that Australians are traveling overseas is not very shocking. First of all, the Australian dollar is strong, meaning that when Australians travel to other countries, they are getting a lot more bang for their buck. On top of this, a number of airlines are offering great deals trying to get people to visit Australia. On that same note, that means that there are a lot of great deals going out of Australia as well.
Only 5.9 million people visited Australia in 2010. That is down 4.3 percent when compared to the year before it. People assume that this year could just be even worse as the Australian dollar continues to flex its muscle.
Other factors in Australia have been affecting the flow of tourists as well. This includes the Queensland floods and, of course, the cyclone that just pasted over Australia. These are factors that of course affect people traveling to Australia as well. Now it is just a question of how long the tourism industry in Australia can continue to stand on its feet.
