DriveMyCar Rentals to Use GPS Tracking Devices on All Rentals
Posted on: February 14th, 2011 by Robin WelchApparently some car hire companies are coming up with new ways to find out where their cars are at all time. Reports now show that car hire company, DriveMyCar Rentals, is going to be installing GPS tracking devices in their hired cars. Although the car hire company thinks it’s a great way to keep up with their property, others are less than thrilled about the news.
In fact, one civil liberties group in Australia says that this is a big invasion of privacy. These civil liberty groups are saying that the company has no right at all to track consumers. It is as if they are treating all of their consumers as common criminals.
Of course, these GPS tracking devices will not be in all cars. In fact, to start with these devices will only be found in the company’s top 30 percent of the fleet. The company said that this new idea is to help ensure their vehicles are safe at all times.
So how will these devices work? Well according to the company, they will be able to track the location of the vehicle in real-time. They will also be notified by SNS when the travelers have breached the terms of their rental agreement. This includes driving on dirt roads or using the car outside city areas.
DriveMyCar Rentals, which is a peer-to-peer company with 5,000 registered users across Australia, said that it will install these devices to help give a certain peace of mind to the vehicle’s owners. In fact, the CEO of DriveMyCar Rentals, Daniel Noble, said that the biggest issue here is trust. The owners of the car want to know that their cars are safe at all times.
