There are a lot of different eco-friendly cars out there. People have claimed to make cars that can be powered by electricity, solar power and even water. However, until now, there have not been many cars that can claimed to run by way of wind power.

Well that is just what the Wind Explorer can do. This is a car that actually came to life out of the imaginations of Stefan Simmerer and Dirk Gion. This is a car that is powered by something that no other car has ever run on before, and that is wind.

Of course, it is important to keep in mind that this is not a sail-powered car. Although, the inventors did note that the two-seater can deploy a kite device that can help pull it down the road. Where the real power comes from is actually a portable wind turbine. This little turbine has a bamboo mast, which the team sets up every night. This little turbine charges up a lithium-ion battery.

However, it was not smooth sailing for the two investors at the start of their journey. In fact, they ran into problems the first couple of nights due to a lack of wind. During this time they did have to use $15 worth of electricity from the grid.

Although things did not start off the way that the travelers wanted, it was still a pretty good deal for crossing Australia. Now the real question: How long did it take for this little 200kg car to complete its journey? Well reports show that the car was able to make its 5,000km journey in about 18 days. During the journey the car set several world records for wind powered vehicles.
