Queensland Survives Cyclone but sees Tourism Industry Damaged
Posted on: February 22nd, 2011 by Dave HumphriesWell, Cyclone Yasi has come and gone. In good old Australian fashion, the people have stood up to its onslaught. Despite the fact that it was one of the most destructive cyclones that has hit Australia in decades, some experts say that the damage was not as bad as first believed.
There were tons of people who were left without power after the cyclone hit. On top of that, the high-powered winds did lead to the destruction of a lot of crops. However, in the end, a lot of the ports in Australia reported no damage. A few of the vessels at these ports that went missing when the cyclone hit were actually relocated later on.
Despite the good news, the tourism industry in Queensland is suffering. It seems that, after hearing about the flooding and the cyclone that pasted through, tourists are under the impression that Queensland must be in need of some help. Due to that, most people are looking to take their vacation elsewhere.
The fact of the matter is, the tourism industry brings in a lot of money for Australia. When tourists stop coming, Australia misses out on that money. Although Queensland has announced that it is safe for people to return, people have not come flocking back the way that Queensland authorities had wanted.
Of course, the same thing happened to Florida in the United States after the big oil spill. Despite the fact that most of the oil that spilled in the Gulf of Mexico never reached Florida shores, people were under the impression that it had. Thus, people started avoiding hotels located on that side of Florida. It took months for Florida to change people’s views.
