Australia Says International Students are Good for Economy

Posted on: June 30th, 2009 by Robin Welch

According to Australia, International students are very good for country finances. Most of the international students that make their way over to Australia are Indian. However, the recent attacks that have been placed on Indian students in Australia have caused a big jolt in this lucrative money machine. Experts say that these attacks are more than likely going to lead to a big dip in the number of applications that Australia sees from India. However, the exact figures are not going to come in for another couple of weeks.

These attacks that have happened to the Indian students have not gone unnoticed, however. The Universities Australia, which represents about 38 universities in the country, have come up with a 10 point plan to help the students feel safer. This 10 point plan does call for some closer cooperation between the education providers, local authorities, and of course, the government of Australia.

Some of the plans actions involve collaborating with the local law enforcement authorities to increase all of the security levels at the universities. They also want the Australian government to work with diplomatic missions to insure India that Australia is a safe place for their students.

The universities also say that all state and territory authorities need to immediately make available travel concessions for all students. This is to help enhance their safety while traveling so they do not have to worry. The universities are also wanting to encourage employers and, of course, unions to support safe travel conditions for student workers as well. Losing these overseas students would be bad for the economy of Australia as a whole.
